1. Artist Profile
Hikaru Utada (宇多田ヒカル Hikaru Utada), commonly called as Utada Hikaru and often called as Hikki by her fans. The woman who was born in New York City, United States on January 19, 1983 (age 27) is a famous Japanese singer. Many of her songs have ranked at 1st position repeatedly on the Oricon chart song. She is widely known due to single "First Love". Her former husband, Iwashita Kazuhiro (who better known by the name Kazuaki Kiriya) is a film director. Master of guitar and piano, Utada has released 4 albums in the Japanese language. In 2005 she tried an international career by an English language album titled Exodus under the name "UTADA".

On December 9, 1998, Utada Hikaru debuted by releasing a single titled "Automatic/time will tell". Outside of estimates, this single made Hikki, that based on her friend comment, became famous in one night. Total sales of single which released in 8 cm and 12 cm was so amazing, it was 2.063.000 copies (but, because counted as the 2 different product, this single only succeed to rank at #2 and #4). Within 2 months, Hikki came back to release a single by the title "Movin' on without you" which was sold over 1 million copies and made the first single of Hikki that peaked at #1 on the Oricon.

Different from the Japanese singer who usually release 3-4 singles before releasing an album, Hikki released her debut album only with breaks of 1 month from the second single. The album, titled "First Love" was immediately shot to # 1 and slowly sold up to 9.86 million copies worldwide, making it the highest selling album throughout the history of music in Japan and up to now seems this record will not be solved. A month after the album was released, a single called "First Love" was released.

At the end of 1999, Hikki released the single # 1 both the "Addicted to You", which sold as many as 1.784 million pieces of CD. Followed by "Wait & See ~ risk ~" which also became # 1 with sales of 1,662,060 copies a CD. Second single is produced by "Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis" have ever produced the Janet Jackson. In the month of July-August Utada Hikaru performed its first national tour, titled Bohemian Summer 2000 during school holidays.

After her marriage, Hikki reduce its activities in Japan and concentrate on his English album. Because of this, singles release to be rare. But Hikki had released a single called "COLORS" in 2003 and a DVD called UH Live Streaming 20 dai wa ike ike!.

On December 21, 2009, Utada's Dirty Desire remixes were released only on Amazon.com, Zune Marketplace, and the U.S. iTunes Store, in support of "This Is the One" and her upcoming tour. The tour, Utada: In The Flesh 2010, was her first concert tour outside of Japan and included eight cities in the US and two dates in London, UK. The tickets for the second London performance went on public sale November 13, and reportedly sold out in just 5 hours. In an interview before she kicked off In The Flesh, Utada said she is planning on promoting This Is the One, and her newest single, Dirty Desire. She also expressed she could be planning to do a cover album, or just take a break to get some new ideas.

On August 9, 2010, Utada announced on her personal blog that starting in 2011, she would go on an indefinite hiatus. Citing fatigue since her debut 12 years before, wanting to rest, study new things, learn more about the world, and to give time to private matters. She says the time could be anything from two to five years.

For that same week marked December 6th, 2010, the Single Collection Volume #2 and the first single "Goodbye Happiness" made their unanimous #1 presence across all the major Billboard Japan charts, which accounts nationwide digital and physical sales, as well as airplay similar to the American Billboard; Specifically, the album received summit status on the Top Albums with "Goodbye Happiness" surging threefold atop the Composite Hot 100, Top 100 Airplay, and Top 100 Adult Contemporary Airplay, respectively.
